Description: This workshop on Modeling Instruction with transportation-related engineering projects is for physics and physical science teachers nationwide. Iowa teachers have priority.

APRIL 17 UPDATE: Jennifer Serra wrote, "We have 14 applications, and we could possibly accommodate as many as 20 total participants. Please extend your posting until May 1st.... This course would be free for out of state teachers. I am waiting on my quote from housing for the cost of staying in our dorms. I believe it is $500 total for the 3 weeks. Our office is located off campus so there is no cost for parking and no permit required."

Modeling Workshops provide a structured inquiry approach to high school science teaching that incorporates computer technology and insights from physics education research.

Participants will:
• Learn effective strategies in Modeling Instruction developed by Arizona State University (Modeling Mechanics)
• Plan and carry out investigations, argue from evidence, and create and evaluate models
• Develop classroom strategies to help students develop skills consistent with the Next Generation Science Standards
• Participate in seminars with transportation experts from the Iowa DOT and InTrans
• Collaborate with other educators to develop modeling based and transportation-themed lessons to use in the classroom.

Modeling Instruction is aligned with the eight scientific practices outlined in the NRC Framework for K-12 Science Education. Program goals are fully aligned with National Science Education Standards.

The program cultivates teachers as school experts on effective use of guided inquiry in science teaching, thereby providing schools and school districts with a valuable resource for broader reform.

The Modeling Method helps teachers (1) foster students' development of STEM skills including collaboration, communication, and math integration; (2) effectively integrate technology into science teaching and learning; (3) assess student understanding of science content in meaningful and authentic ways; (4) improve or refine students' understanding of physics content; (5) organize course content around scientific models; (6) develop an engaging, robust, non-lecture based teaching methodology.

Modeling Workshop Objectives
    * provide high school teachers with a strong rationale for instructional design and pedagogical practice,
    * provide teachers with a unifying approach to different levels of a physics course,
    * build community among physics and physical science educators,
    * improve student learning of physics.

Major Activities
    * Teachers begin the workshop with an introduction to modeling.
    * Teachers work on modeling activities, first as students and then as teachers.
    * Each modeling cycle begins with students developing a conceptual model that describes and/or explains a physical phenomenon. Students learn to use multiple representations (numerical data, graphs, symbolic relationships, diagrams, maps, and linguistic interpretations) to express the model.
    * Students deploy the conceptual model in various situations to generalize their understanding. They test/refine designs and gain ability to control physical phenomena.
    * Students interpret each deployment and publicly negotiate appropriateness in model-centered discourse: presentations, discussions, and Socratic questioning.
