Florida A&M University has a strong commitment to enhancement of teacher education in Physics.  The Physics Department and College of Education developed the B.Ed. in Physics program and, recently, the M. Ed in Physics program. Among our main goals are (a) building alliances with local (Leon County) physics high school and middle school teachers; (b) increasing enrollment of students in physics educational programs; (c) finding financial resources (e.g., scholarships) to support the students who have decided to pursue a career as a physics teacher; and (d) developing and implementing an effective program to support program graduates in their first years of work in a real school environment. The establishment of the Teacher–in-Residence program at FAMU is one of our main objectives. We believe that Teachers-in-Residence will help us to create a better linkage between physics secondary school teachers and the FAMU Physics Department.

During past three years, the number of students graduating with a B. Ed in Physics has declined dramatically.  Currently there is only one student in the M. Ed in Physics degree program.  To correct this situation our Department requires additional funding. We believe that our goals and needs fit very well into the PhysTEC project, and that we are capable of developing a comprehensive and successful PhysTEC site at FAMU.
