Misericordia University is one of 5 institutions in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area which have formed a collaborative group, Wilkes-Barre Area Physicists (WBAP). Each year WBAP sponsors a Friends of Physics lecture series for the public and high school and college students and teachers, with lectures rotating amoung the institutions. An electronic file has been created to facilitate communication with high school physics teachers in a three county area about the lecture series. Many high school teachers come to the lecture series and some bring students with them.
WBAP facilitates pre-college teachers receiving PA ACT 48 credits or college credits for attendance at the lectures. A proposal for a jointly offered physics major is at various stages of the approval process at the 3 institutions which will offer the major. WBAP colleges will teach the upper level physics courses on a rotating basis. Misericordia will be developing a Physics Pedagogy course for the major.
Misericordia University's Physics Department will be submitting a Minor in Physics proposal to the Curriculum Approval process this academic year.
Misericordia University's Physics Department is offering a Physical Science course (using the PIPS Curriculum), an Astronomy course, and an Earth Science course for the Pennsylvania Middle School Science concentration.
