The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers students numerous opportunities to explore interests in education. Our concentration in Physics Education has been offered to students since 1998. Through a series of electives, the concentration exposes majors to pedagogy, elementary and middle-school classroom fieldwork, and Next Generation Science Standards. Students can join our Physics Assemblies program and travel to local elementary schools performing classroom assemblies, or they can become experienced Learning Assistants helping teach introductory physics courses on campus.
Students with a passion for teaching can join UCI’s CalTeach program and become classroom teachers. UCI CalTeach is a unique program where students complete a physics bachelor’s degree and a California teaching credential in just four years. CalTeach students learn teaching skills in coursework, practice their methods in local K-12 classrooms, and receive one-on-one professional mentoring from expert teachers. Since 2008, UCI’s CalTeach program has graduated over 100 STEM majors into teaching careers.
