West Virginia University: Program Goals
The WVU PhysTEC project seeks to dramatically improve physics instruction at all levels at WVU by introducing a culture of data-driven departmental transformation. By improving instruction, advising and degree plans, while providing pathways to the teaching profession through the new WVUteach program, we hope to dramatically increase the number of physics majors graduated and the number of those majors that enter the teaching profession. The transformation will further improve the physics instruction of thousands of WVU students.
Our primary project goals are:
- Reform the PHYS 111/112 course sequence to feature a tightly timed lecture/lab component with a dramatically improved laboratory experience while reducing the amount of lecture given.
- Implement the PET curriculum in PHYS 105.
- Provide seamless integration between PHYS 111/112 as one recruiting engine and WVUteach-driven recruiting by an active TIR.
- Improve departmental advising of all students and ensure advisers are aware of the teaching career path and its requirements.
- Develop departmental-data resources to improve advising, retention, and upper-level course transformation.
- Provide PER resources in the form of informational departmental meetings or class measurements to faculty interested in transforming their instruction.
- From achieving these goals, dramatically increase majors graduated and the majors going into teaching.
