|Name:||Research Experience for Secondary School Teachers Program|
|School/Institution:||Brigham Young University|
|Teacher Level:||High School
|Description:||The Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program at BYU is designed to give secondary physics and physical science teachers an opportunity to participate in a summer research research experience. The intent is to give these teachers an opportunity to enliven their teaching for their students by actual hands-on experiences they can transfer to classroom instruction and laboratory examples.
There are exciting opportunities in a number of areas including optics (using lasers of all kinds including ultrashort pulse and UV lasers), computer modeling, plasmas, solid state and thin film science, acoustics, theory, and astronomy.
The program nominally runs over the same period as the REU program. In 2011, this is from June 6 through August 12. We recognize that some teachers might have scheduling problems due to their district's academic schedule. We are willing to make adjustments to the time period if that works for the Research Adviser as well. Our experience is that teachers have the best experience if they can participate in the program for a full ten weeks. We are willing to be flexible with that period if necessary to accommodate individual circumstances.
Benefits and Requirements
College Transcript Credit
Laboratory Equipment Costs
|Benefit Explanation:||To the extent that the budget permits, participants will be compensated at the same rate that they get for teaching during the academic year. In some cases, we may not be able to quite meet this stipend for relatively highly-compensated teachers depending on the participating of others in the program.
In addition to a stipend, out-of-area RET participant will receive an allowance to cover the cost of room and board while participating in the program. The allowance is usually sufficient to cover the costs of the participants themselves. If a participant chooses to bring their family with them, they may need to pay for some of the cost of housing for their family out of their stipend.
Eligible participants may received BYU graduate credit for their participation in this program. The cost of tuition and fees is covered as part of the grant.
We are anxious for participating teachers to be able to apply their summer research experiences in their classrooms when they return. One way we will help you integrate your summer experience in your instruction is to provide you with appropriate laboratory equipment you can bring back with you to use int the classroom. The equipment will be chosen by the participating teacher in consultation with their faculty advisor and the REU administrator.
