University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Physics Tacher Preparation Program

Students completing the Physics Major for Teacher certification at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point will be members of two departments: the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Education.

In the Department of Physics and Astronomy students master the discipline.  The classroom/laboratory environment allows students to experience many active methods of learning including inquiry, in-class tutorials, small group collaborations and experimental design.  Recently students have participated in a variety of activities outside of their course work through independent study or paid positions.  Students have participated in a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research Project, built demonstration equipment for the department and researched the concepts that they address, and served as lab assistants for an Introductory Physics Course and tutors for the department.

In the School of Education's Professional Education Program, students will encounter opportunities for demonstrating practical competence within classrooms, and will gain a sound understanding of educational pedagogy and knowledge of the most current views regarding educational practices.  Part of our vision for our students is that they become reflective practitioners, capable of anticipating future needs and changes within the professional arena, and capable of assuming roles of leadership.
