We have begun working closely with the Department of Mathematics, Science and Instructional Education (MSITE), a unit of the College of Education, to promote education of physics teachers who can earn dual degrees (MS-SE and BA in Physics) in 4 years. We are working with the ECU Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (CSMTE) a unit of MSITE, to build contacts with physics teachers in regional high schools and their students. We have made contacts with the head of the physics program at Pitt County Community College, which is located near ECU, and intend to extend these contacts to other CCs in the region, again with the intention of increasing the number of undergraduate students entering the combined Physics-MSITE programs. We plan on developing contacts with the 7 major military bases in eastern NC and intend to promote the opportunities available to become certified physics teachers to the technically inclined service members approaching retirement or discharge.
