We introduced a pilot undergraduate learning assistant (LA)-based tutorial in a small-enrollment section of calculus-based Mechanics (Spring 2011 and Spring 2012) and Electricity & Magnetism (Fall 2011). In Fall 2012, we are planning to initiate, and to eventually sustain through institutional support, an LA program for large-enrollment introductory classes in Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism. The LA program would provide early career teaching experience for future physics teachers, while simultaneously providing an additional support mechanism for the students taking our introductory physics courses. PTEC membership would signify our commitment to developing our role in physics education training, and would provide us the opportunity to develop our program through both interaction with other member institutions with similar goals, and through exchange of ideas and expertise withindividuals at meetings and workshops of PTEC member institutions.
The LA program has continued through Spring 2015, with four additional undergraduates participating and gaining teaching experience through assisting with the running of tutorials in recitation sections for the large enrollment introductory physics classes.
