The Physics Department at South Dakota State University has a long history of teacher preparation and professional development. SDSU's Physics Department has been a Rural PTRA site, has had numerous NCLB/Title II Partnership grants (including four years as a C3P site), and continues to seek opportunities to provide faculty development opportunities for high school science and math teachers particularly in the physical sciences and physics. We also are part of a NSF Noyce grant at SDSU to encourage students to pursue STEM based careers in education. The Physics Department is participating with the Math, Biology, Chemistry, and Education Departments at SDSU in this Rural Enhancement of Math And Science Teachers (REMAST)/Noyce program and is on the APLU's SMTI Leadership team. In addition we have an accredited baccalaureate degree in physics education and participate in the College Board's AP Physics program in various ways. The Physics Department at SDSU also sponsors an annual "Physics Bowl" for high school students (now in its 36th year) and coordinates the South Dakota Outstanding Physical Science Teacher Award sponsored by 3M and the local NSTA chapter.
