Program in Physics Education
Science Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure) for grades 5-12, with Physics Specialty: This program is designed to meet the requirements for science teacher licensure with a specialty in Physics in the State of Minnesota. Students who complete this major will be eligible for teacher certification in Physics in grades 9-12 and for teaching all sciences in grades 5-8.
Physics Department Initiative
As with many states, the number of high school physics teachers that graduate from Minnesota's universities is very small compared to the number of teachers needed. To address this need, following discussions with area superintendents and teachers, we developed a program in fall 2003 to license 30 science teachers in Physics. This program began in fall 2003 with two on-line physics courses designed for teachers. In the summer of 2004, I coordinated a Summer Physics lab component of the program for teachers. At the end of this summer program, all of the teachers participating became eligible for licensure in Physics teaching in Minnesota. This number of new physics teachers licensed is more than BSU has graduated in the last 15 years in our traditional undergraduate physics teaching program. We had 16 teachers participate in the 2005 summer program, and recently received funding for a third year.
