Hampton University provides summer teacher in-service workshops in nanoscience through a NSF-CREST grant. First year graduate students are required to participate in a supervised teaching experience (usually two semesters of an introductory laboratory section) in order to gain some experience with undergraduate students. A significant number of our doctoral graduates have taken teaching positions at colleges and universities (including, our own).
The current teacher preparation program at Hampton University only includes the two sciences: biology and mathematics. The Commonwealth of Virginia requires secondary school teachers to have discipline specific undergraduate majors, in addition to a set of scores on several examinations. Plans to develop a physics teacher development program are under develoment.
