*The CoS TPP opened to students in the 2000 - 01 academic year.
(Physics/Physical Science graduates are certified to teach physics.)

Commentary on PhysTEC Teachers data:

  • The numbers of PhysTEC teachers in the table above indicate the number of teachers prepared (completely or partially) in the CoS TPP. Over the seven years of the program’s existence, some students complete some of the program’s courses, and go on to either complete another certification program or obtain teaching jobs that do not require certification. The numbers in the table above include eight science teachers who did not complete the CoS TPP, but who are teaching.

PhysTEC Future Teachers

Year 1 1999 - 2000 Year 2 2000 - 2001 Year 3 2001 - 2002 Year 1 2002 - 2003 Year 2 2003 - 2004 Year 3 2004 - 2005 Year 4
 PhysTEC Future Teachers     67 100 114 135 141

Commentary on Future Teachers data:

  • The numbers of PhysTEC Future Teachers in the table above reflect the number is of individual students enrolled in any one of the CoS TPP program courses in a given academic year.
  • These numbers are larger than the number of completers because they include students enrolled in the first program course. Approximately 30% of the students who complete this course do not take any further courses. Additionally, students can proceed through the program courses on their own schedule. Thus, the number of completers doesn’t follow a regular pattern.

Mentored PhysTEC Teachers       0 1 3 3 3
Mentored Non - PhysTEC Teachers       1 1 1 2 1

Commentary on mentors and mentees data:

  • The PhysTEC Mentees in the table above includes the students in the PhysTEC physics courses; in some years, the PhysTEC TIRs attended the labs for these courses to assist the graduate TAs.
  • The Mentored PhysTEC Future Teachers in the table above includes students enrolled in the courses in the CoS TPP with which the PhysTEC TIR worked.
  • The Mentored PhysTEC Teachers includes the beginning physics or physical science teachers that each PhysTEC TIR mentored; the Mentored non-PhysTEC Teachers includes the TIRs’ replacements at their school site.

Commentary on enrollment data:

  • The enrollment data in the table above indicates the number of students enrolled in the introductory mechanics and the introductory E & M courses each year. Those two courses are offered in the fall semesters, and are prerequisites for the courses in that sequence that are offered in the spring semesters.

Notes:

  • PhysTEC Students were counted in the introductory mechanics and the introductory E & M courses each year. Those two courses are offered in the fall semesters, and are prerequisites for the courses in that sequence that are offered in the spring semesters.
  • PhysTEC Future Teachers were counted by their enrollment in one TPP course each year. Student enrolled in more than one TPP course were counted only once.
  • We maintain e-mail contact with completers of the CoS TPP, and request annual updates on their teaching situation. Since many remain in the Tucson area, they also become part of our mentor teacher pool once they have three years of teaching experience.
