Introduction
Outreach, Professional Development, and Local Alliances

Outreach

The ISU Physics Department maintains a Physics Road Show program that is supported by a $10,000 start-up grant. Many undergraduate PTE majors have worked with this program to offer school programs, Science Night at the local children's museum, and in other venues working with the Challenger Learning Center at the Prairie Aviation Museum.

Professional development

The ISU Physics Teacher Education program has hosted five years of professional development workshops (2001-2005) as part of the PTRA Rural Institute program.

The ISU Physics Teacher Education program has promoted the use of the Modeling Method of Instruction through summer workshops for inservice physics teachers (2001, 2003, 2005, and 2006).

Other recent grant-funded summer professional development workshops include the Problem-based Learning method of instruction (2003).

Local alliances

The ISU Physics Teacher Education program currently maintains a 50-member school-university partnership known as the Chicago ITQ Science Project that also promotes the Modeling Method of Instruction (2005-2008).

The program also provides leadership for 12 Local Physical Science Alliances though the Illinois Section of the AAPT, the Illinois Association of Chemistry Teachers, and the Illinois Science Teachers Association.
