Supported Site University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Program Data

The project collects data on the number of PhysTEC Graduates, PhysTEC Future Teachers, PhysTEC Learning Assistants, and PhysTEC Mentors; these PhysTEC terms are defined here. The project also collects data on physics pedagogy courses, early teaching experiences, and enrollment in K-8 physical science courses for future elementary school teachers.

Commentary on PhysTEC Teachers data:

Our PhysTEC project has no elementary teachers. Our School of Education does prepare elementary teachers, but the Physics & Astronomy Department does not participate.

Two students who participated in the pedagogy course in Spring 2008 and graduated in May 2009 are pursuing careers in Secondary Education. One completed the UNC-BEST program and is on the job market while the other (who did not complete the full UNC-BEST program and therefore is not eligible for certification) has been hired to teach in a private high school in North Carolina through the Southern Teachers Agency.

One physics student is currently accepted into the UNC-BEST program and one physics student plans to apply in the fall.

Commentary on enrollment data:

The teacher preparation program began in 2007/08 and the pedagogy course was taught for the first time in Spring 2008. Students were admitted to the teacher preparation program for the first time in May 2008. The UNC-BEST recruiting seminar was offered for the first time in Spring 2009. Recorded data are based on end-of-semester enrollments.
