Definition of PhysTEC Secondary Graduate: Any student who has graduated from a PhysTEC Institution and

(a) has a major or minor in physics, OR (b) has completed coursework equivalent to a major or minor in physics

AND

(a) has certification to teach high-school physics, OR (b) has completed a teacher education program.

Definition of PhysTEC Future Teacher : A student at a PhysTEC Institution who has committed to completing a program of physics teacher education.

Definition of a Future Teacher at (Cal Poly Pomona, CPP):

  • Physics undergraduates who are in Robert Noyce Scholarship program
  • Physics undergraduates or graduates who are taking Teacher Education prerequisites courses (Table 1) for the credential program
  • Credential candidates those who have already enrolled in Cal Poly Pomona secondary physics teaching credential program and are taking Clinical Practice courses

Commentary on Future Physics Teachers data:

  • Two CPP recent physics graduates (LAs) are taking credential courses elsewhere, so we have NOT included them in the table above.
  • CPP students need to complete 4 education prerequisite courses (16 quarter units) before entering the credential program. Students can enroll in these prerequisite courses while undergraduates, but most of the teacher preparation coursework for the credential is typically done after students graduate.
  • A list of the prerequisite and core courses in the secondary science teacher credential program is shown in Table 1.

Commentary on Enrollment data:

  • Prior to PhysTEC the courses above were mostly taught in traditional format. Employing LAs in the class has increased student engagement and group activities.
  • Course description and total student enrollment: (numbers below are rounded to the nearest 5.)
    • PHY 200: LA seminar course, new course
    • PHY 131: Calculus-based General Physics 1, total enrollment in AY 2012-13 was 1100, mostly engineering students
    • PHY 132: Calculus-based General Physics 2, total enrollment in AY 2012-13 was 800, mostly engineering students
    • PHY 133: Calculus-based General Physic3 2, total enrollment in AY 2012-13 was 980, mostly engineering students
